The collection includes biographical materials, correspondence, newspaper clippings, published works by Hughes and his colleagues, unpublished writings by Hughes, scripts of his WOI radio talks, and photographs. The biographical materials include essays, tributes, speech manuscripts, ISU personnel information and press releases. The correspondence concerns crop research being conducted at other universities' experiment stations and seed farms. All the writings, published, unpublished, and the radio talk scripts focus on teaching agronomy, and changes in major agricultural crop research. The talks also deal with Mexican agriculture, Henry Wallace, hybrid corn, and Iowa history. The collection also contains background materials such as articles, pamphlets, studies, and reports on birdsfoot trefoil. The photographs include images of clover, corn, farm equipment, maps of U.S. and world food production, pasture improvement and preparation, individuals and groups of people, reed canary grass, and miscellaneous photos.

Professor of agronomy, Chief of the Iowa experiment farm crops station, 1910-1947. Harold De Mott Hughes received his B.S. in 1907 at the University of Illinois and his M.S. in Agriculture at the University of Missouri in 1908, where he also worked as an instructor of farm crops from 1908 to 1910. In 1910 he came to Iowa State College and remained on the faculty until 1947. Hughes was active in research studies on all major crops. His emphasis was on forage crops and pasture management.
